August 2026 update:
Microsoft Copilot is available as a free AI assistant for general questions, writing, brainstorming, summarizing, web-based tasks, image creation, and other uses. It is available through the web, Windows, mobile devices, and Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft has continued integrating Copilot with Microsoft 365. Current Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium plans include different levels of Copilot access, with limits that vary by plan. Features include Copilot in Microsoft 365 applications, image creation and editing, voice, and other AI capabilities.
Microsoft has also continued expanding Copilot's ability to work with web information, files, applications, and agents. Copilot Chat and agents can use web search to provide more current information when a question goes beyond a user's work content.
Microsoft is also updating the Copilot web, desktop, and mobile experiences to make it clearer whether you are using a personal or work account. The changes include clearer account indicators and a new Copilot web address.
What this means:
Copilot is particularly relevant for people who already use Microsoft products and services.
If you use Microsoft 365 regularly, the question may be less about choosing a separate AI assistant and more about what Copilot capabilities you already have—and whether paying for additional capabilities makes sense for you.
If you are considering Copilot, check the current Microsoft plans and capabilities directly before deciding which plan—or whether Copilot—is right for you.
