PART IV — Looking Ahead

Chapter 19

Where Do We Go From Here?

AI Is Becoming More Than an Answer Machine

When I began using ChatGPT, I thought of AI mainly as something I could ask questions.

That seems almost quaint now.

AI has moved quickly from answering questions toward helping people create, analyze, organize, and act. It can work with text, images, documents, code, and information from the web. Some systems can remember context. Some can connect with other services. Some can perform tasks rather than simply explain how a person might perform them.

That raises a more interesting question than which AI system will be most popular next year:

Where is this technology going?

I don't think anyone can answer that with confidence.

The products will change. Capabilities will change. Some tools will disappear, and others we have never heard of will become familiar.

So this chapter isn't a prediction about particular products.

It is about the changes that may shape how we interact with AI.

From Answers to Actions

Today you might ask an AI assistant to compare several flights and then make the reservation yourself.

A more capable assistant could search the choices, apply your preferences, identify the best options, ask for your approval, and complete the reservation.

The difference is significant.

The first system gives you information.

The second can take part in the process.

The same shift could happen with email, scheduling, shopping, research, and many other routine tasks.

The question changes from:

What can AI tell me?

to:

What can AI do for me?

That may be one of the most significant changes ahead.

But action brings a new question:

What should AI be allowed to do without asking first?

As AI becomes more capable of taking action, permission and boundaries become part of using it responsibly.

AI With More Context

Another change is already becoming visible.

Instead of explaining everything in words, you can increasingly show AI what you mean.

A photograph can communicate something that would take a paragraph to describe.

A screenshot can show an error more clearly than a typed description.

A document can be examined directly.

A recording can provide information that would be difficult to explain.

This changes the conversation.

You don't always have to translate your problem into the language of the machine before asking for help.

Memory Changes the Relationship

AI may become better at remembering useful context.

An assistant that knows how you prefer information presented, what projects you are working on, or what you have already discussed can reduce repetition.

But memory creates new questions.

What should an AI remember?

How long should it remember it?

Who can access that information?

How easily can you correct or remove it?

The more useful AI becomes at remembering, the more important those questions become.

What You'll Discover

The book goes further into the changes that may shape the next stage of AI:

  • the movement from answers toward actions;

  • AI working with more kinds of information;

  • memory and continuing context;

  • assistants that can use tools and services;

  • the growing importance of permission and human approval;

  • how increasingly capable AI may change the way we work;

  • and why predicting the future is less useful than preparing for change.

The larger lesson is that the interface may change dramatically even when the basic question remains the same: How can this technology help us accomplish something worthwhile?

Try It Yourself

Think about one ordinary task you do today that involves several steps.

Perhaps you search for information, compare choices, enter information somewhere, send a message, or schedule something.

Ask yourself:

Which parts of this process could AI eventually help with?

Then ask a second question:

Which part would I still want to control myself?

You don't need to predict exactly what AI will do.

The exercise is simply to start noticing where the boundary between assistance and action might move.

Why Read the Book?

Chapter 19 begins the book's final Part by stepping back from today's AI assistants and asking what may come next.

The book goes further into agents, connected information, memory, tools, and the growing ability of AI to act rather than simply respond.

But the purpose isn't to predict the winning product.

It is to develop a way of thinking that remains useful as the products change.

The future of AI may be difficult to predict. Learning how to think about it is something we can do now.
