Porter's Five Forces

A way to examine competition and the forces affecting a market

Porter's Five Forces is a framework for examining the competitive forces that affect a business, product, or market.

The five forces are:

  • Competitive rivalry — how strongly existing competitors compete with one another

  • Threat of new entrants — how easily new competitors can enter the market

  • Bargaining power of suppliers — how much influence suppliers have over prices, terms, or availability

  • Bargaining power of buyers — how much influence customers have over prices, terms, or their choice of supplier

  • Threat of substitutes — how easily customers can choose a different product or service that meets the same need

AI can help you identify the forces, organize information about the market, and examine how changes in one force might affect the others.

When to use it

Use Porter's Five Forces when:

  • you are examining a business or industry

  • you are considering entering a market

  • you are evaluating the competitive position of a product or service

  • you want to understand where competitive pressure comes from

  • you want to examine how changes in a market could affect a business

Try this with AI

Help me conduct a Porter's Five Forces analysis of [business, product, or market]. Examine competitive rivalry, the threat of new entrants, supplier power, buyer power, and the threat of substitutes. Use current information where available. Separate facts from assumptions and identify claims that should be verified. Explain which forces appear strongest and why.

Then ask a follow-up

Which of the five forces poses the greatest risk to this business or market? Which parts of your analysis depend most on uncertain or current information? What should I verify?

You can then ask AI to examine one force in greater detail or show how the analysis might change if market conditions change.

A useful caution

Porter's Five Forces depends heavily on information about the market being examined.

AI may have incomplete, outdated, or incorrect information about competitors, suppliers, customers, regulations, or market conditions. It may make a market appear more or less competitive than it really is.

Ask AI to identify the evidence behind its assessment. Verify important current information, particularly when the analysis will affect a significant business decision.

Remember

Porter's Five Forces helps you see where competitive pressure comes from. It does not tell you whether a business will succeed.
