PESTLE

A way to examine the external forces affecting a situation

PESTLE analysis looks at six kinds of external factors:

  • Political — government policies, public policy, and political conditions

  • Economic — costs, markets, employment, interest rates, and other economic conditions

  • Social — demographics, attitudes, behaviors, and cultural changes

  • Technological — new technologies, infrastructure, and changes in how technology is used

  • Legal — laws, regulations, and legal requirements

  • Environmental — climate, natural resources, sustainability, and environmental conditions

AI can help you identify factors in each category, organize them, and examine how they might affect your situation.

When to use it

Use a PESTLE analysis when:

  • external conditions may affect your decision

  • you are planning for the future

  • you are evaluating a business, project, product, or organization

  • laws, technology, economics, or social conditions may change

  • you want a broader view of factors outside your direct control

Try this with AI

Help me conduct a PESTLE analysis for [situation]. Identify the most important political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors that could affect it. Separate current facts from assumptions or forecasts. Identify which factors are most likely to have a significant effect and which should be verified.

Then ask a follow-up

Which PESTLE factors could have the greatest effect on my decision? Which are most uncertain, and what information should I verify before making a decision?

You can then ask AI to examine one category in greater detail or explore how a possible change in one external factor could affect your plans.

A useful caution

A PESTLE analysis can produce a long list of external factors without showing which ones actually matter.

AI may include remote possibilities, outdated information, or predictions that sound more certain than they are. Conditions in several PESTLE categories can change, so information that was accurate when the analysis was created may later need to be checked again.

Ask AI to rank the factors by likely impact and uncertainty. Verify important current information before using it in a decision.

Remember

PESTLE helps you see external forces that could affect a decision. It helps you prepare for change, but it cannot predict what will happen.
