Ask AI to Challenge the Analysis

A way to make AI question your reasoning

AI can be useful for generating an analysis, but it can be even more useful when you ask it to challenge the analysis.

Instead of asking AI to agree with your conclusion, ask it to look for weak assumptions, missing information, alternative explanations, and evidence that could change the result.

The goal is not to make AI argue for the sake of arguing. The goal is to find weaknesses you might have missed.

How to Ask AI to Challenge an Analysis - 2:32

When to use it

Ask AI to challenge an analysis when:

  • you have reached an important conclusion

  • you want to test whether your reasoning holds up

  • you may be relying on assumptions

  • you want to identify information you may have overlooked

  • you want to hear a credible alternative interpretation

  • the decision has meaningful consequences

Try this with AI

Challenge the following analysis: [paste analysis]. Do not simply agree with it. Identify the strongest assumptions, missing information, weak links in the reasoning, alternative explanations, and evidence that could change the conclusion. Point out any claims that need verification. Give the strongest case for a different conclusion, then explain which interpretation is better supported by the available evidence.

Then ask a follow-up

Which criticism of my analysis is most significant? What evidence would most strongly support or weaken my conclusion? What question should I investigate before making the decision?

You can then ask AI to revise the analysis in light of the strongest criticism and show exactly what changed.

A useful caution

Asking AI to challenge an analysis does not guarantee that the criticism is correct.

AI may invent objections, give weak alternatives too much attention, or accept an incorrect premise in its attempt to argue against your conclusion.

A useful challenge should lead you back to evidence and reasoning, not simply produce disagreement.

Ask AI to explain the basis for each important criticism. Then decide which criticisms are worth investigating.

Remember

A good challenge can reveal a weakness in your thinking. AI can raise the questions. You decide whether the answers are convincing.
