C — Current AI Assistant Marketplace

The AI assistant marketplace is much larger than the handful of assistants most U.S. readers encounter.

This page provides a current directory of selected AI assistants and providers from the United States, China, Europe, and other regions.

The marketplace changes frequently. New assistants appear, existing providers expand into new markets, and some services become less significant or disappear. Regional availability can differ from what is available in the United States.

This directory does not attempt to rank every AI assistant or model. It focuses on services that are significant enough to be useful to readers who want to know what is available beyond the assistants they already use.

Last reviewed: August 2026

United States and North America

The five assistants covered in Appendix A represent much of the U.S. consumer market, but they are not the whole market. Other services have significant or distinctive positions, whether through social platforms, voice assistants, multi-model access, or specialized forms of conversation.

The entries below are selected examples rather than a complete list. Descriptions focus on what has changed or become significant since the book was published, rather than repeating the explanations in the book.

Selection: This is a selected marketplace, not a complete catalog. An assistant may be omitted because it is too new, too specialized, no longer significant, unavailable to most readers, or simply not yet important enough to include. The list can grow or change as the marketplace develops.

The Marketplace Beyond the United States

The U.S. assistants most familiar to readers are only part of the global AI assistant market.

China has developed a substantial domestic AI market, with several major providers offering assistants and model families that have become significant beyond their home market. Europe has its own developing AI sector, with providers such as Mistral AI building models and assistants for an international audience.

Availability is part of the marketplace story. Some services are broadly international, while others are primarily regional or may restrict access based on country, account, or service.

The entries below are selected examples rather than a complete list. Descriptions of their general areas provide orientation; the Current update focuses on developments since the book was published.

Selection note

This is a selected marketplace, not a complete catalog. An assistant may be omitted because it is too new, too specialized, no longer significant, unavailable to most readers, or simply not yet important enough to include. The list can grow, shrink, or change as the marketplace develops.

Specialized AI: A Second Dimension of the Marketplace

The global marketplace is organized by geography, but geography is only one way to view it. AI systems are increasingly differentiated by the kind of work they are built to support.

A general-purpose assistant may handle many kinds of work. A specialized AI tool may be built around one medium, profession, or task. The distinction is useful even as the boundaries between the two become less distinct.

General-Purpose and Specialized AI Are Converging

The distinction between general-purpose AI assistants and specialized AI tools is becoming less clear.

General-purpose assistants are increasingly adding capabilities that once required separate specialized systems. An assistant that began primarily as a conversational system may now create images, analyze documents, search the web, write and debug software, generate presentations, work with audio, and perform other specialized tasks.

At the same time, specialized systems continue to develop deeper capabilities in particular areas. A tool built specifically for images, music, video, coding, research, or another discipline may provide controls and workflows that a general-purpose assistant does not offer.

For the user, the question is less "Can AI do this?" and more:

Which kind of AI is best suited to this particular job?

Sometimes the answer will be the general-purpose assistant you already use. Sometimes a specialized tool will be a better choice. Sometimes the two can work together.

That is why the categories on this page should be viewed as areas of specialization, not exclusive product labels. A product may appear in more than one category, and its capabilities may change over time.
